Delaney looked around the vast chambers that she was to call her rooms. Colorful tapestries hung on the walls. Plush carpets spread across every surface of the black and white marble floors. The palace hadn’t been a disappointment—the ocean alone was incredible enough to mesmerize her every chance she looked upon it. She considered it a small mercy that her chambers overlooked the sea. And here, in the stillness of the night, she stared out the windows to the sparkling, endless mass of water stretching out before her.

Incredible, really, if she were being honest with herself.

But she didn’t feel like being honest with herself.

Not with the emptiness that plagued her now. Not with Ravid staring her down like prey yet still giving her the cold shoulder whenever they were alone, not with her father so enraptured with the king and queen that she might as well not have existed. And certainly not with the crown prince looking at her like a disease.

Yes, Delaney was alone in this vast palace. Alone in this task to become the princess that would save the kingdom. And what a lonely task it was turning out to be.

She shuffled from her receiving room into her bedroom and bathing room beyond, the theme of black and white stone continuing throughout the whole palace, her rooms being no exception. Her bed—four posters and much too large for one person—loomed before her like the wasteland that separated her home from this new one. She climbed in and sprawled across it, wondering if she would ever feel like she belonged here. Wondering if she would ever see her little sisters again. A tear fell down her cheek, the first one she had allowed herself to cry since finding out she was to become a pawn in her father’s games.
